Role of AI in Small Enterprises

A webinar on the “Role of AI in Small Enterprises” was successfully conducted on 02 February 2026 under the theme “AI for Atmanirbhar Bharat.” The session was organised on behalf of TISS Incube Foundation, the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship, and the Institute Innovation Council (IIC) at TISS.

It was an honour to host our distinguished speaker, Dr. Purushottam Bhandare, a noted policy researcher and data analyst. Dr. Bhandare brings extensive experience in the domains of public policy, financial inclusion, and social entrepreneurship, with his research focusing on technology, education, inequality, healthcare, and sustainable development. He has authored several peer-reviewed research publications, presented his work at international conferences, and currently serves as a Senior Peace Fellow, where he translates complex data into actionable policy recommendations aimed at driving meaningful social impact.

The session provided a comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its relevance for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Dr. Bhandare began by explaining what AI is, followed by an overview of various categories of AI, their capabilities, and real-world applications relevant to small businesses.

He highlighted the key barriers to AI adoption among SMEs, including limited awareness, lack of skilled manpower, foundational challenges, AI solution accessibility, and resistance to technological change. Emphasis was placed on the need for a structured approach to AI adoption, rather than ad-hoc or tool-driven implementation.

The webinar further covered practical frameworks such as the Identification Canvas, helping enterprises identify suitable AI use cases aligned with their business goals. Applications of AI in inventory management were discussed, demonstrating how data-driven systems can improve efficiency, reduce wastage, and enhance decision-making.
Dr. Bhandare also addressed the risks associated with AI systems, including data privacy, algorithmic bias, and over-dependence on automation, stressing the importance of responsible and ethical AI use. Overall, the webinar offered valuable insights into how AI can serve as an enabler for self-reliant, competitive, and sustainable small enterprises, aligning strongly with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The session was highly informative and well-received by participants, equipping them with both conceptual clarity and practical perspectives on leveraging AI in their entrepreneurial journey.
