Thread Craft India is helping to preserve and sustain the age old art of Chikankari and is also giving support in terms of designing, product diversification, revival of near extinct stitch types, market expansion and overall improvement in the living conditions of the Chikankari artisans. For this purpose, Thread Craft seeks to establish a cooperative of the artisans. It also envisions preventing the exploitation of the artisans by connecting their art to the unexplored national and international markets and giving them ownership in their enterprise so as to help them get their rightful share of profit. A system based on mutual cooperation would not only make the process sustainable but would also foster greater satisfaction in the artisans. Regular training will enhance their skill level and better understanding of the market trends will move them from an impersonal system of production where they are merely a small cog in the wheel to the level of a partner in the organization. Such a system of cooperation will help in bringing about positive changes in social and economic life of the place.
Thread Craft has brought an organized working pattern for artisans which has increased their productivity. Increased cohesion among them has empowered them to face their day to day problems collectively. Regular and increased monthly income of the embroiderers has empowered them to contribute to their family income due to which their confidence level has increased a lot. Average monthly income of the embroiderers has increased from merely Rs 700 – 800 per month to Rs 1900 per month. Free eye checkups and spectacle distribution has enhanced their trust towards the organization and its functioning.
Due to popularity of the organization and its healthy working environment, many more artisans are willing to join the centre.
